USB-C
USB-C connector
With the announcement of USB Type-C there is a new standard USB plug, also called connector, that makes an end at all the different connections. At Type-C there is only one connector required.
At this moment many USB connectors have a type A side, for example in computers, and a smaller type B side, which connects phones or tablets. With a Type-C connector you can connect all other USB devices: such as your mouse, keyboard, your smartphone, external hard drives and even your monitor.

Advantages USB-C
Compact and reversible
De USB Type-C connector is just like other micro USB connecters very compact. The expectation is that USB ports in devices such as laptops, are much smaller in the future. The USB-C connector has no top or bottom, so you can use it in both ways.A fast way to charge with USB Power Delivery (PD)
USB Power Delivery (PD) charges a smartphone up to 70% faster compared to traditional USB chargers. An intelligent chip recognizes the device and automatically communicates the correct amount of charging current. Both the device as the charger must support PD to charge faster. Type-C can supply power in two directions, without having to change the direction of the cable. This makes it possible to charge, for example, a telephone with a tablet, or vice versa. The fastest data transfer with USB Power Speed+ (USB Generation 2
The USB standard USB 3.1 Generation 2 is introduced simultaneously with the USB Type-C and enables speed up to 10Gbps. This fast new standard is also known as USB Superspeed+.Connects displays up to 4K. Display alternate mode (DP Mode)
With Type-C it is possible to send video with a 4K resolution through a USB cable, making it a monitor connection. One monitor with 4K resolution or multiple monitors with lower resolution can be connected. For this Display Alternate Mode (DP mode) technology is used. Check if your laptop or pc supports this. The Alternate Mode ensures that multiple signals are simultaneously sent via the USB-C. For example, power, data, image and audio.
Thunderbolt 3 support
Thunderbolt 3 uses the Type-C connector and enables even higher speeds. Where the USB SuperSpeed+ (USB 3.1 Generation 2) standard makes up to 10Gbps possible, Thunderbolt delivers 3 speeds up to 40Gbps. It is also possible to use two 4K monitors simultaneously to provide power and image. Note that both the laptop, the peripherals and cable should support Thunderbolt 3.Video output over USB-C for laptops and phones
In the past, some Android phones were supported by MHL “Mobile High-definition Link”. To be able to use MHL, you still had to have a special MHL cable and your TV / monitor / beamer also needed MHL support to view the images of your phone on a TV / monitor / beamer. Now more and more phones are released that use “Display over USB” instead of MHL support. Giving you the opportunity to easily convert images via your USB type-C to your TV / monitor / beamer without having to use MHL support.
What is MST (Multi Stream Transport)?
MST is part of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard, with which monitors and computers can support "daisy-chaining".
You usually recognize daisy-chaining when the monitor has both an input and output DisplayPort, so that you can connect the first monitor to the computer and the second monitor to the first monitor. If both the monitor and the computer support MST daisy-chaining, the two screens work as separate screens. Exactly as if they were connected directly to the computer.USB-C and MST
Within the USB-C it is possible that the DP-alt mode (DisplayPort alternate mode) is supported by your laptop / PC. If this is the case it will also support MST, and you can choose to use a USB-C to MST adapter, this adapter has multiple video outputs that you can use to have multiple monitors (even if the monitors don't support MST ) to connect to a MST (daisy chain). The connected screens can now be recognized as separate screens on your laptop / PC and be used as an extended desktop.MST on macOS
Please note!!! macOS does not support MST Daisy chaining. macOS only supports Daisy-chaining with the Thunderbolt 3 standard. So the MST adapters will not provide the desired result for macOS devices, the connected screens in this case only show a clone (copy) of your main screen on the connected screens also called SST (Single Stream Transport).Type-C: not the same as USB 3.1
Type-C and USB 3.1 are often wrongly used interchangeably. Type-C is a new connector and USB 3.1 is a new USB standard.

Which USB generations exist
USB is the standard for connecting peripherals such as mice, keyboards, external hard drives. USB connectors are also used for charging of smartphones and tablets. There are several generations of USB and several connectors. The USB organisations changed the naming of USB several times.
- USB 2.0, also called Hi-Speed, was the successor of USB 1.0 and USB 1.1. The speed is 480Mbps
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 is called SuperSpeed Usb and has a speed up to 5Gbps. USB 3.2 generation 1 is the same as USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 is called SuperSpeed Usb 10Gbit/s and has a speed up to 10Gbps. This is the same as USB 3.1 gen 2 also called SuperSpeed+
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is called SuperSpeed Usb 20Gbit/s
Connect devices with different USB connections
More and more devices are using the new USB-C technology, at the same time a lot of devices are equipped with other USB standards. To connect devices to each other, an adapter is a good solution.
