Fiber to the Office
Fiber to the office: future-proof, energy-efficient and sustainable
Fiber To The Office (FTTO) is a standard-compliant cabling concept developed by MICROSENS for modern network environments. The intelligent combination of fiber optic uplink and copper user ports enable the technical advantages of fiber optic lines to be exploited for floor cabling.

Fiber To The Office vs Structured Cabling Network (SCN)
In contrast to the current structured cabling network (SCN), FTTO offers future-proof fiber optic cables for horizontal and vertical cabling. FTTO offers a very cost-effective and flexible network infrastructure that pays off in a few years!
Fiber to The Office:
Fiber to The Office:
- Almost no length limitations (typical several thousand meters for single mode fiber)
- No active equipment needed for signal conditioning within the networking path
- Gain of building space, open for commercial use
- Cable volume is reduced by 75 per cent, reduced fireload, high resistance to electromagnetic interference
- No additional cost for climatisation, uninterruptable power supply and access control
- High bandwidth per user. Only four users per FTTO Switch share one Gigabit link
- In case of technology change the floor cabling does not need to be renewed
- Integration of POE, Power-over-Ethernet (+) through the MICROSENS Micro Switch
Structured Cabling Network (SCN)
- Strict lengths limitations (max. 100 m)
- Many wiring cabinets for cable consolidation needed (could be more than 100 per floor), wasting valuable commercial space
- Thick cable trunks with high fire load and susceptibility to EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) can have negative impact on overall network reliability
- High demand for network hardware leading to low energy efficiency, high cost for cooling and maintenance and power resilience
- Limited average bandwidth per user. One Gigabit link is shared by up to 24/48 users
- Change of technology requires completely new horizontal cabling
Micro Switches from MICROSENS
Whether an office application, IP telephony, IP security technology, building technology, or applications in the Smart Building – Micro Switches from MICROSENS offer users the performance, security, and economy they need in future-safe, decentralised data networks.
Four high-performance 10/100/1000 Mbps connections for PC, IP phone, printer or any other IP-capable terminal device, optionally with PoE+.
2. Gigabit uplink ports
One, or optionally two, Gigabit uplink ports for maximum network availability and reliability, two SFP slots for purely fi ber-optic-based networks or one SFP slot for optical fi bers or an RJ-45 connection for copper data lines.
3. Power supply connection
Power supply optionally with 230 VAC from the power or optional DC version for external DC power supplies. Optional PoE/PoE+ version with 48 VDC input.
4. Earthing terminal
Terminal for the connection to the earth potential. The earthing of the switch can be done either via the earthing lug and a standard cable shoe or the earthing screw.

Serial RS-232 console connection for optional accessories, also confi gurable as RS-232 device server.
6. Led display
Clearly arranged display of the following functions: readiness to operate, link status, data activity, PoE status, booting or reset process.
7. Reset and system key
Reset key for resetting the switch or for loading the confi guration stored last (direct hardware function). System key to select the IP confi guration via management or to restore to the factory settings.
8. Labelling field
Removable labelling fileld, specially integrated into the device cover and, thus, protected from surface cleaning.
9. Micro SD card slot
The firmware and configuration data can be stored on the microSD card. In the case of replacement, this ensures the shortest possible recovery time.
10. Gigabit downlink port
10/100/1000Base-T connection to a central network switch over copper lines or for the cascading to another Micro Switch.
