What is cable management?

Cable management refers to arranging, structuring and organising cables in, for example, network and server rooms. With increasing complexity and size of cable systems, good cable management is very important. It prevents cable wear and tear, overheating in server rooms and airflow blockages, but good cable management also makes it easier to distinguish cables by application and identify specific ports. Of course, there are many types of cabling where cable management can be applied. On this page, we mainly focus on cable management for network cables (such as UTP cables and CAT5E/CAT6/CAT6A cables), fibre-optic cables and power cables.

With cable management you can:
  • Organise and guide bundled cables
  • Separate cables per application
  • Identify individual ports

Organise and guide cables in bundles

Network cables and fiber cables from a switch or server are often bundled before bridging a distance of several meters. Cable bundling is used in 19" cabinets in server rooms within an office network or data center. These cable bundles are guided through the shunting panels by means of Velcro/cable ties.
To create optimum cable management in a 19" cabinet, every third panel should consist of a cable management panel/shunting panel. For vertical guidance, shunting eyes, Velcro and cable ties, combined with tie wrap, can be used.

Tip: For covering longer distances, you can use a spiral band.

Seperate cables per application

Within a network you will find cables suitable for different applications. In a data network this can be telephony, data and backup cabling. Within power supply different cabling is used for the main data source and the backup supply. To make a clear distinction between these applications it is best to use coloured cabling. By using coloured cables it is easier to distinguish different applications.

Identify individual ports

In a data network you want to know which port of the switch is connected to which desk. This can be achieved by labeling individual cables and record what cable is used by what connection. Most common is usage of alfanumerical series with the same label on both sides.

Solutions for identifying individual ports

• Pre-printed labels
Labels with a pre-printed text are easy in use. We offer an assortment with pre-printed labels with letters, numbers and colour.

• Order cables including labels
At Intronics you can have your cables labeled. This is possible for nearly all of our cabling such as network cables (CAT5E/CAT6/CAT6A), fiber optic cables, power cables etc. Advantages of labeled cables are:
- No investment in printers or other equipment
- You can specify what should be labeled and where on the cable.
- Saving on labour costs because the cables are already labeled.
